Car for the city

Born to overcome the mud on the roads in the historic quarter will not park 😉

With this folk wisdom, we want to bring you to the topic of the article - cars for the city.

How to choose a car that will become your supercar on city streets and not be a problem? What mistakes should be avoided when choosing? And is there a single ideal city car?

Read more about all this.

Is the ideal city car a myth?

☝ Let's start with an important caveat. Sometimes marketers force us to think about the existence of standards. You watch ads, read a custom article, and listen to a blogger, and it influences your opinion in one way or another.

“The ideal car for the city” is a fairly common formula, under which hundreds of thousands of cars are sold every year. But there are no two identical cities, and even more so two identical drivers. Your best car is not necessarily on the lists that auto reviewers make.

When choosing, be sure to consider the details relating to you personally:

  • features of your locality (distances to be covered, condition of the road surface);
  • family composition (for a large family, "smart" is clearly not enough);
  • the intensity with which it is planned to use the car (some need a car per day, others need a car an hour every two days).

Often, when analyzing the situation, it turns out that the car is intended not only for commuting to the office block but also for weekly trips to the country. And if we are not talking about a cottage in the suburbs, but about a house in the village with a broken primer, then the requirements for the characteristics of the car change greatly.

In the next section, we'll talk about performance, but keep in mind that the car should meet your needs, and not justify the advertising budgets of manufacturers and salons.

Auto for the city: outside and inside

So, what parameters should you rely on when choosing a car?

  • Body type

You can often hear that a small car is recommended for the city. Like, it is easier to park it, and in a traffic jam, you can slip through quickly. But the realities do not always allow us to have such a car.

You can often hear that a small car is recommended for the city. Like, it is easier to park it, and in a traffic jam, you can slip through quickly. But the realities do not always allow us to have such a car.

A microcar is the choice of single people who live in a city with good roads and low curbs, and almost never leave it. It is also advisable to choose super-compact models for the second or third car in the family. Popular representatives of this class are Smart Fortwo, Daewoo Matiz, KIA Picanto, Fiat 500, Skoda Fabia, and a number of others.

Three- or five-door hatchbacks are suitable for small families and infrequent trips out of town. There are many hatchbacks on the streets of Kyiv, and for good reason - they completely satisfy the owners with engine power, trunk capacity, and, finally, cost. Look out the window of a high-rise building and you will see them - KIA Rio, Skoda Rapid, Opel Astra, Ford Focus, Renault Sandero, and their blood brothers.

Sedans are also a common solution for the city. They are chosen by families with children, people who travel a lot, or those who need a trunk separated from the passenger compartment. In our latitudes, Volkswagen sedans are often found - Passat and Jetta, Ford Fusion, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, Mazda 3, and others.

Of course, there are times when the aforementioned body types are not suitable for users. A large family, pets (and not a Chihuahua, but a pair of cheerful Labradors or a giant Newfoundland), own business - all this can be a reason to buy a station wagon, minivan, or even a minibus. And if you live in an area that is ignored by utility workers on snowplows in winter, then a crossover or SUV may be quite acceptable here.

  • Fuel consumption

Fuel consumption has ceased to be a personal problem of the driver (and his wallet). The more fuel a car consumes, the more emissions it produces, and this, you see, applies to all residents of the city.

Ukraine has not yet introduced restrictions on the use of cars that can harm the environment and humans. But here it is logical to make a choice in favor of the most environmentally friendly option.

Among cars of any class, they are more or less costly in this indicator. Find out what the manufacturer writes about this, and also do not forget to read the reviews of car owners.

  • Transmission

Automatic or mechanic? Of course, this parameter often depends on driving habits and personal preferences. After all, if you've learned how to drive an automatic transmission, you'll only switch to manual when absolutely necessary.

But in general, it is believed that the machine is the preferred option. On the roads in megacities, you need to be as careful and concentrated as possible.

Shifting gears, and pressing the clutch - these are micro-details that can distract the driver, especially a beginner. But if the car traffic in your city is not very busy, the automatic transmission will not be a problem.
